O prémio e o evento da EUPL deste ano são aguardados com grande expectativa. A EUPL foi mencionada no Festival du Livre de Paris, um importante evento para livreiros na Europa. O evento aconteceu de 17 a 20 de abril e foi um grande sucesso. Desde 2009, mais de 216 autores foram reconhecidos pela EUPL e muitos foram discutidos durante a feira. Novas traduções de muitas obras altamente conceituadas estão sendo publicadas neste momento. Uma tradução notável é o romance “Hagabula”, de Todor Todorov, que foi traduzido para o italiano e já está disponível. Este majestoso romance, publicado pela Voland Edizione, é conhecido por seu humor negro e temas surreais. Uma leitura fantástica, que agora está sendo distribuída em italiano.
Em 2026, outro grande evento envolvendo a EUPL está programado. A Biblioteca Britânica receberá 26 autores europeus que explorarão, entre outros temas, a crise migratória, a identidade e as mudanças climáticas. Este evento está marcado para os dias 16 e 17 de maio e promete ser muito envolvente. Um evento especial na noite de sábado reúne os autores internacionalmente aclamados Nino Haratischwili e Vincenzo Latronico em uma conversa moderada por Maya Jaggi — um dos pontos altos do festival. No domingo, o festival continua com “Histórias Pessoais”, onde Fabio Andina, Liliana Corobca e Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs refletem sobre memória e lugar, com moderação de Bidisha. Em “A Chegada da Maioridade”, Pirkko Saisio, Goran Vojnović e Kotryna Zylė exploram identidade e transformação ao longo das gerações, com moderação de Dan Richards. A entrada para o evento custa de 10 a 20 libras.
Autores do EUPL serão pré-selecionados para o Prémio de Literatura do BERD deste ano. O Banco Europeu para a Reconstrução e o Desenvolvimento apresentará 10 autores e obras pré-selecionadas para o prémio. Entre os nomes apresentados estão Jacek Dukaj (EUPL 2009) com seu romance Ice, uma epopeia transiberiana traduzida por Ursula Phillips. Martina Vidaić (EUPL 2023) é reconhecida por Bedbugs, uma exploração pungente da condição humana, traduzida por Ellen Elias-Bursać. Ambas as autoras trazem perspetivas muito diversas e estilos diferentes. Os vencedores do prémio do BERD serão anunciados em 2 de julho de 2026. O valor do prémio será dividido entre o autor e o tradutor. Os autores pré-selecionados que concorrem ao prémio deste ano são:
1) Pessoas e Árvores: Uma Trilogia, de Akram Aylisli (Azerbaijão), originalmente escrita em azerbaijano e traduzida do russo por Katherine E. Young e publicada pela Plamen Press
2) Sololand, de Hassan Blasim (Iraque), traduzido do árabe por Jonathan Wright e publicado pela Comma Press
3) No Final do Verão, de Magdalena Blažević (Croácia), traduzido do croata por Anđelka Raguž e publicado pela Linden Editions
4) Pedra, Papel, Granada, de Artem Chekh (Ucrânia), traduzido do ucraniano por Olena Jennings e Oksana Rosenblum e publicado pela Seven Stories Press UK
5) Gelo, de Jacek Dukaj (Polônia), traduzido do polonês por Ursula Phillips e publicado pela Head of Zeus, um selo da Bloomsbury Publishing
6) A Morte e o Jardineiro, de Georgi Gospodinov (Bulgária), traduzido do búlgaro por Angela Rodel e publicado pela Weidenfeld & Nicolson
7) Nós, Computadores, de Hamid Ismailov (Uzbequistão), traduzido do uzbeque por Shelley Fairweather-Vega e publicado pela Yale University Press, Londres
8) Na Linha de Greenwich, de Shady Lewis (Egito), traduzido do árabe por Katharine Halls e publicado pela Peirene Press
9) Olho do Macaco, de Krisztina Tóth (Hungria), traduzido do húngaro por Ottilie Mulzet e publicado pela Seven Stories Press, Reino Unido
10) Percevejos, de Martina Vidaić (Croácia), traduzido do croata por Ellen Elias-Bursać e publicado pela Sandorf Passage
Todas essas obras são ficção de altíssima qualidade e merecedoras do prémio.

Biografia do autor do artigo: Rafael Kopp Alvarez Procopiak nasceu no Brasil. Brasília, Distrito Federal. Iniciou estudos em Washigton, DC onde cumpriu o pré-escolar e o início da educação primária. Nessa época, acompanhou os pais (ambos diplomatas) juntamente com as duas irmãs. Em seguida, a família foi transferida para Moscou, onde prosseguiu os estudos na American School. De volta ao Brasil, continuou na American School em Brasília. Nos anos seguintes, viveu na Argentina, México e Canadá.
Na Argentina, prosseguiu os estudos na ST.George’s School, escola inglesa vinculada ao sistema educacional britânico. No México, cursou parte da secundária na “Greengates School”, também de orientação britânica, e no Canadá , Toronto, finalizou a secundária. Em Montreal, ingressou e concluiu o Bachelor’s degree in Psichology, onde foi destacado na Dean’s Letter dentre os 100 melhores estudantes da Universidade. (Concordia University) Rafael também colaborou como voluntário se integrando na equipe de boas vindas aos novos alunos apresentando o campus da universidade. Em Potugal, Faro, trabalhou também como voluntário na charitable borganization “Existir”. Como parte do programa de Mestrado em Turismo, que concluiu na Unviversidade do Algarve, Rafael foi co-autor de artigos publicados em revista britânica especializada em lazer e turismo.
The European Union Prize for Literature
The European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) is a prestigious award given on a yearly basis to the best fiction writer in Europe for a work of fiction. There has been since 2009 216 recognized authors. The Winner of the EUPL will receive a grand prize of 10000 Euros as well as financial incentives to have the work translated into different languages. The runner ups will receive a prize of 5000 Euros and also receive incentives to have their work translated as well. Other shortlisted authors will receive incentives to have their work translated into other languages and their works will be promoted in fairs across the EU. A booklet with excerpts of the shortlisted authors will be published as well. The key objectives of the EUPL are:
– Showcasing Diversity
– Enhancing Visibility and Career Growth
– Encouraging Cross-Cultural Dialogue
– Supporting Creative Europe’s Goals
– Reinforcing the European book ecosystem by creating networking and promotion oportunities.
– Championing Inclusivity and diversity
The EUPL was established in 2009. Since then it has developed considerably. In the year 2022 major changes were instituted to the EUPL. A seven member European jury began selecting an overall winner for each edition along 5 honourable mentions.
This years winner for the EUPL include Lora Tomaš from Croatia.She wrote the fictional work“ Paper of your skin” based in India written in epistolary form. Also shortlisted was Sargis Hovsepyan who wrote “You Die Today, I Die Tomorrow” a work set in contemporary Armenia dealing with the pain of Russian refugees arriving in the country, it is an interesting novel. Also amongst this years winners is Evridiki Pericleous-Papadopoulou from Greece who wrote “Sorely Grieved: Helen of Karpasia” set in 1974 Cyprus in the aftermath of the Turkish invasion, a notable work. These are only a few of the shortlisted authors for this year, many more deserve attention.
Lets examine the Portuguese winners of the EUPL. Several Portuguese authors have been awarded the first prize or honourable mention by the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL). Here are the Portuguese winners and the nominee:
- Frederico Pedreira (2021 Winner): Won for his book A Lição do Sonâmbulo (The Sleepwalker Lesson).An semi-autobiographical work written by the poet Frederico Pereira.
- David Machado (2015 Winner): Won for Indice Médio de Felicidade (Average Happiness Index). It is an admirable, relevant novel about an optimist who fights to the end for his life and the happiness of those he loves.
- Dulce Maria Cardoso (2009 Winner): Won for Os Meus Sentimentos. (My feelings). A fine romance written in stream of consciosness.
- Gabriela Ruivo (2024 Nominee): Nominated for Lei da gravidade.(The Law of Gravity). A gripping Romance written by Gabriela Ruivo.
This writer recommends the Top awarded work by Frederico Pedreira in particular as an immensely enjoyable treat. Pedreira has translated the delightful works of Yeats and Chesterton and this work clearly deserves the EUPL prize for its richness. May we all find an author we particularly love amongst these gems!

Author biography: Rafael Kopp Alvarez Procopiak was born in Brazil. Brasília, Federal District. He began his studies in Washington, DC, where he completed pre-school and early elementary school. At that time, he accompanied his parents (both diplomats) along with his two sisters. The family then moved to Moscow, where she continued her studies at the American School. Back in Brazil, she continued at the American School in Brasilia. In the following years, he lived in Argentina, Mexico and Canada.
In Argentina, he continued his studies at ST.George’s School, an English school linked to the British education system. In Mexico, he attended part of secondary school at the Greengates School, also British, and in Canada, Toronto, he finished secondary school. In Montreal, he entered and completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, where he was featured in the Dean’s Letter as one of the university’s top 100 students. (Concordia University) Rafael also worked as a volunteer on the team welcoming new students and introducing them to the university campus. In Potugal, Faro, he also worked as a volunteer for the charitable organization “Existir”. As part of the Master’s programme in Tourism, which he completed at the University of the Algarve, Rafael co-authored articles published in a British magazine specializing in leisure and tourism.
