O Prémio da União Europeia para a Literatura (EUPL) é um prémio prestigioso concedido anualmente ao melhor escritor de ficção da Europa por uma obra de ficção. Desde 2009, 216 autores foram reconhecidos. O vencedor do EUPL receberá um grande prémio de 10.000 euros, além de incentivos financeiros para a tradução da obra para diferentes idiomas. Os autores finalistas receberão um prémio de 5.000 euros e também incentivos para a tradução de suas obras. Os demais autores finalistas receberão incentivos para a tradução de suas obras para outros idiomas, e seus trabalhos serão promovidos em feiras literárias por toda a União Europeia. Um livreto com trechos dos autores finalistas também será publicado. Os principais objetivos do EUPL são:

– Aumentando a Visibilidade e o Crescimento Profissional
– Incentivando o Diálogo Intercultural
– Apoiando os Objetivos do Europa Criativa
– Reforçando o ecossistema do livro europeu através da criação de oportunidades de networking e promoção.
– Defendendo a Inclusão e a Diversidade
O EUPL foi criado em 2009 e, desde então, evoluiu consideravelmente. Em 2022, foram implementadas mudanças significativas no EUPL. Um júri europeu composto por sete membros passou a selecionar um vencedor geral para cada edição, além de cinco menções honrosas.
Entre os vencedores deste ano do EUPL está Lora Tomaš, da Croácia. Ela escreveu a obra de ficção “Papel da sua pele”, ambientada na Índia e escrita em forma epistolar. Também foi finalista Sargis Hovsepyan, autor de “Você morre hoje, eu morro amanhã”, uma obra ambientada na Armênia contemporânea que aborda a dor dos refugiados russos que chegam ao país; um romance interessante. Outra vencedora deste ano é Evridiki Pericleous-Papadopoulou, da Grécia, autora de “Sorely Grieved: Helen of Karpasia”, ambientada no Chipre de 1974, após a invasão turca, uma obra notável. Estes são apenas alguns dos autores finalistas deste ano; muitos outros merecem reconhecimento.
Vamos analisar os vencedores portugueses do Prémio Europeu de Literatura (PEL). Vários autores portugueses foram galardoados com o primeiro prémio ou menção honrosa no Prémio Europeu de Literatura (PEL). Eis os vencedores portugueses e o nomeado:
- Frederico Pedreira (Vencedor 2021): Ganhou pelo livro “A Lição do Sonâmbulo”. Obra semiautobiográfica do poeta Frederico Pereira.
- David Machado (Vencedor de 2015): Venceu com o livro “Índice Médio de Felicidade”. Trata-se de um romance admirável e relevante sobre um otimista que luta até o fim por sua vida e pela felicidade daqueles que ama.
- Dulce Maria Cardoso (Vencedora de 2009): Vencedora por “Meus sentimentos”. Um belo romance escrito em stream of consciousness.
- Gabriela Ruivo (indicada para 2024): Nomeada para a Lei da gravidade. Um romance emocionante.
Este autor recomenda especialmente a obra premiada de Frederico Pedreira como um deleite imensamente prazeroso. Pedreira traduziu as encantadoras obras de Yeats e Chesterton, e esta obra merece claramente o prémio EUPL por sua riqueza. Biografia do autor do artigo: Rafael Kopp Alvarez Procopiak nasceu no Brasil. Brasília, Distrito Federal. Iniciou estudos em Washigton, DC onde cumpriu o pré-escolar e o início da educação primária. Nessa época, acompanhou os pais (ambos diplomatas) juntamente com as duas irmãs. Em seguida, a família foi transferida para Moscou, onde prosseguiu os estudos na American School. De volta ao Brasil, continuou na American School em Brasília. Nos anos seguintes, viveu na Argentina, México e Canadá.
Na Argentina, prosseguiu os estudos na ST.George’s School, escola inglesa vinculada ao sistema educacional britânico. No México, cursou parte da secundária na “Greengates School”, também de orientação britânica, e no Canadá , Toronto, finalizou a secundária. Em Montreal, ingressou e concluiu o Bachelor’s degree in Psichology, onde foi destacado na Dean’s Letter dentre os 100 melhores estudantes da Universidade. (Concordia University) Rafael também colaborou como voluntário se integrando na equipe de boas vindas aos novos alunos apresentando o campus da universidade. Em Potugal, Faro, trabalhou também como voluntário na charitable borganization “Existir”. Como parte do programa de Mestrado em Turismo, que concluiu na Unviversidade do Algarve, Rafael foi co-autor de artigos publicados em revista britânica especializada em lazer e turismo.

The European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) is a prestigious award given on a yearly basis to the best fiction writer in Europe for a work of fiction. There has been since 2009 216 recognized authors. The Winner of the EUPL will receive a grand prize of 10000 Euros as well as financial incentives to have the work translated into different languages. The runner ups will receive a prize of 5000 Euros and also receive incentives to have their work translated as well. Other shortlisted authors will receive incentives to have their work translated into other languages and their works will be promoted in fairs across the EU. A booklet with excerpts of the shortlisted authors will be published as well. The key objectives of the EUPL are:

The EUPL was established in 2009. Since then it has developed considerably. In the year 2022 major changes were instituted to the EUPL. A seven member European jury began selecting an overall winner for each edition along 5 honourable mentions.
This years winner for the EUPL include Lora Tomaš from Croatia.She wrote the fictional work“ Paper of your skin” based in India written in epistolary form. Also shortlisted was Sargis Hovsepyan who wrote “You Die Today, I Die Tomorrow” a work set in contemporary Armenia dealing with the pain of Russian refugees arriving in the country, it is an interesting novel. Also amongst this years winners is Evridiki Pericleous-Papadopoulou from Greece who wrote “Sorely Grieved: Helen of Karpasia” set in 1974 Cyprus in the aftermath of the Turkish invasion, a notable work. These are only a few of the shortlisted authors for this year, many more deserve attention.
Lets examine the Portuguese winners of the EUPL. Several Portuguese authors have been awarded the first prize or honourable mention by the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL). Here are the Portuguese winners and the nominee:
- Frederico Pedreira (2021 Winner): Won for his book A Lição do Sonâmbulo (The Sleepwalker Lesson).An semi-autobiographical work written by the poet Frederico Pereira.
- David Machado (2015 Winner): Won for Indice Médio de Felicidade (Average Happiness Index).It is an admirable, relevant novel about an optimist who fights to the end for his life and the happiness of those he loves.
- Dulce Maria Cardoso (2009 Winner): Won for Os Meus Sentimentos. (My feelings). A fine romance written in stream of consciosness.
- Gabriela Ruivo (2024 Nominee): Nominated for Lei da gravidade.(The Law of Gravity). A gripping Romance written by Gabriela Ruivo.
This writer recommends the Top awarded work by Frederico Pedreira in particular as an immensely enjoyable treat. Pedreira has translated the delightful works of Yeats and Chesterton and this work clearly deserves the EUPL prize for its richness. May we all find an author we particularly love amongst these gems!

Author biography: Rafael Kopp Alvarez Procopiak was born in Brazil. Brasília, Federal District. He began his studies in Washington, DC, where he completed pre-school and early elementary school. At that time, he accompanied his parents (both diplomats) along with his two sisters. The family then moved to Moscow, where she continued her studies at the American School. Back in Brazil, she continued at the American School in Brasilia. In the following years, he lived in Argentina, Mexico and Canada.
In Argentina, he continued his studies at ST.George’s School, an English school linked to the British education system. In Mexico, he attended part of secondary school at the Greengates School, also British, and in Canada, Toronto, he finished secondary school. In Montreal, he entered and completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, where he was featured in the Dean’s Letter as one of the university’s top 100 students. (Concordia University) Rafael also worked as a volunteer on the team welcoming new students and introducing them to the university campus. In Potugal, Faro, he also worked as a volunteer for the charitable organization “Existir”. As part of the Master’s programme in Tourism, which he completed at the University of the Algarve, Rafael co-authored articles published in a British magazine specializing in leisure and tourism.
