O Grande Prémio Europeu de Literatura deste ano foi para “Mariborská hypnóza”, de Dora Kaprálová. Esta obra em prosa centra-se na história de amor entre um hipnotizador de Maribor, Svengali, e a sua namorada, a delicada Elis, e incorpa ora elementos de realismo mágico à novela. Dora Kaprálová escreve sobre um local central na República Tcheca, mas a obra transmite uma sensação de pesadelo, com um forte sentimento de desinformação. O livro tem um narrador peculiar: uma mosca doméstica comum. A história que ela narra é o romance entre Leo Svengali, um hipnotizador da cidade, e sua assistente, Elis. O livro é um excelente exemplo de realismo mágico.

O vencedor do grande prémio EUPL foi anunciado em 29 de maio de 2026 por um júri internacional de sete membros, em uma cerimônia durante a Feira Internacional do Livro de Varsóvia. Após cuidadosa consideração, o júri declarou este romance como a melhor obra de literatura europeia de 2026. Na própria República Tcheca, este livro recebeu o prémio máximo do país: o Magnesia Litera. De acordo com o perfil público do autor na UE, a obra “combina ludicidade, humor e melancolia, ao mesmo tempo que reflete sobre os fenômenos da ilusão, notícias falsas e a diferença entre a imaginação inocente e as mentiras perigosas”.
Para a edição de 2026, autores emergentes de 14 países foram selecionados por seus respectivos países em fevereiro, no âmbito do EUPL. Este é mais um incentivo para ler “Mariborská hypnóza”, já que foi considerado o melhor trabalho entre 14 escritores renomados. Biografia do autor do artigo: Rafael Kopp Alvarez Procopiak nasceu no Brasil. Brasília, Distrito Federal. Iniciou estudos em Washigton, DC onde cumpriu o pré-escolar e o início da educação primária. Nessa época, acompanhou os pais (ambos diplomatas) juntamente com as duas irmãs. Em seguida, a família foi transferida para Moscou, onde prosseguiu os estudos na American School. De volta ao Brasil, continuou na American School em Brasília. Nos anos seguintes, viveu na Argentina, México e Canadá.
Na Argentina, prosseguiu os estudos na ST.George’s School, escola inglesa vinculada ao sistema educacional britânico. No México, cursou parte da secundária na “Greengates School”, também de orientação britânica, e no Canadá , Toronto, finalizou a secundária. Em Montreal, ingressou e concluiu o Bachelor’s degree in Psichology, onde foi destacado na Dean’s Letter dentre os 100 melhores estudantes da Universidade. (Concordia University) Rafael também colaborou como voluntário se integrando na equipe de boas vindas aos novos alunos apresentando o campus da universidade. Em Potugal, Faro, trabalhou também como voluntário na charitable borganization “Existir”. Como parte do programa de Mestrado em Turismo, que concluiu na Unviversidade do Algarve, Rafael foi co-autor de artigos publicados em revista britânica especializada em lazer e turismo.
Book review: Mariborská hypnóza
This year’s European prize for literature Grand prize has gone to Mariborská hypnóza by Dora Kaprálová. This is a prose work centered on The love story between a Maribor hypnotist, Svengali, and his girlfriend, the fly-weight Elis, brings elements of magical realism into the novella. Dora Kaprálová writes about a central location in the Czech republic, yet the work feels nightmarish with the heavy sense of disinformation. The book has a peculiar narrator: an ordinary house fly. The story it narrates is the romance between Leo Svengali, a city hypnotist, and his assistant, Elis. The book is a prime example of magical realism.
Mariborská hypnóza is set in the city of Maribor in the Czech republic. The EU Prize for Literature applauded Kaprálová’s linguistic creativity and her exploration of Maribor’s cultural heritage. You should pick up this book if you are a fan of:

This winner of the EUPL grand prize was announced on 29 May 2026 by a seven-member international jury at a ceremony during the Warsaw International Book Fair. The jury after careful consideration declared this novel the position of best European work of literature for 2026. In the Czech republic itself this book received the highest prize of the nation: the Magnesia Litera. According to the EU public profile for the author the work “combines playfulness, humour and melancholy while reflecting on the phenomena of the illusion, fake news, and questions of difference between innocent imagination and dangerous lies.” For the 2026 edition, emerging authors from 14 countries were shortlisted by their country in February in the EUPL. This is a further incentive to read Mariborská hypnóza since it was judged the best work of 14 renowned writers. May you have a good read with this novel, it is surely captivating!

Author biography: Rafael Kopp Alvarez Procopiak was born in Brazil. Brasília, Federal District. He began his studies in Washington, DC, where he completed pre-school and early elementary school. At that time, he accompanied his parents (both diplomats) along with his two sisters. The family then moved to Moscow, where she continued her studies at the American School. Back in Brazil, she continued at the American School in Brasilia. In the following years, he lived in Argentina, Mexico and Canada.
In Argentina, he continued his studies at ST.George’s School, an English school linked to the British education system. In Mexico, he attended part of secondary school at the Greengates School, also British, and in Canada, Toronto, he finished secondary school. In Montreal, he entered and completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, where he was featured in the Dean’s Letter as one of the university’s top 100 students. (Concordia University) Rafael also worked as a volunteer on the team welcoming new students and introducing them to the university campus. In Potugal, Faro, he also worked as a volunteer for the charitable organization “Existir”. As part of the Master’s programme in Tourism, which he completed at the University of the Algarve, Rafael co-authored articles published in a British magazine specializing in leisure and tourism.
